FEC presented at Erasmus+ conference

On invitation by the National Agency (NABIBB) of Germany, project coordinator Martin Kolb had the chance to present the FEC project at the “The Future is Europe – mit Erasmus+ Bildung gestalten - Jahrestagung 2019” conference in Bremen. See the presentation and a few pictures.

After being featured by the NABIBB on their website Martin was invited to present the project at the federal yearly conference of the NABIBB during the Workshop “Die Kompetenz: Digitalisierung”. The concept and results of the project were discussed as well as general implications of digitalization on vocational education in the field of commercial vocations. Our project was featured by the NABIBB recently and KBS Bayreuth was awarded a prize in recognition of the innovative concepts in e-commerce.

“Fit for E-Commerce” featured as best-practice example

After the final report of the project at the beginning of 2019 the national agency of Germany Nationale Agentur Bildung für Europa beim Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (NABIBB) approached the German project team in order to publish an article about the project on their website. Today this article was released and can be found here. We are very proud that our project was chosen as an example of successful project work.

“isi DIGITAL” Prize awarded to KBS Bayreuth

Futhermore, KBS Bayreuth received a prize for school development in digitalization. On June 25th the project team and headmaster Bernhard Grünewald received the third prize of €1,500.00 from state secretary Anna Stolz. In her laudatory speech Eva Geist, member of the jury, praised the “innovative, cooperative and sustainable work at KBS Bayreuth”. She expressly mentioned the “Fit for E-Commerce” project and the cooperation between the three partner schools when “testing, evaluating and adapting the teaching materials”. Besides the Erasmus+ project she also pointed out the innovative additional lessons at KBS Bayreuth. Furthermore in a short interview, Martin Kolb pointed out the innovative business ideas which students developed during the project and what the main challenges are when creating a web shop.

Sunday

After a little journey, we arrived in Prague main train station at around 1 pm. In Prague we gave our luggage to a storage place and started to walk towards the city centre of Prague. We have seen many different places like Charles Bridge, Hradcin and had the opportunity to taste the Bohemian kitchen. After seeing the rest of the sights, and a little delay we finally arrived in Dobruska.

Monday

Today we started our day with an amazing breakfast. Shortly after, we went to the school: SPSel.it Dobruska. There we met the Czech students and teachers and learned about the Czech school system. We also had a little tour through the whole school and did some ice-breaking activities. After lunch, we met the mayor at the town hall and we had the chance to walk on top of the tower to see all over the city of Dobruska. Because the weather was so freezing, we cancelled the sightseeing tour through Dobruska, but we stopped at a little museum, the parent house of Frantisek Vladislav Hek. For dinner, we had traditional Czech food made by the students and teachers, it was a delicious experience.

Tuesday

In the morning, we started the day with a presentation about the Internet and its basic technologies. The main idea behind the web is to have common information space in which we communicate by sharing. Our lecturer taught us about the history of HTML, CSS and JavaScript and explained the differences between those programming languages. We also learned something about the phases of development of the web. After that, we had the chance to program our first own Website, with a little help…

In the afternoon, we sat down in our groups put together of three students from Czech Republic, Italy and Germany. We than started creating the Webpage. See our results above.

Wednesday

Today we continued to program our web pages. After that, we had a short journey to Nové Město nad Metují a small city next to Dobruska, where Petra told us a little about the history of the city and we had a short walk through the town and had the chance to buy some souvenirs. The city is famous for its castle and the wooden bridge which led from the countryside to the marketplace. In the castle’s cellar we had a delicious lunch and time to relax. After returning back in Dobruska we continued to work on our websites.

Thursday

Today was the the last day to work on the details of our website before presenting the final results on Friday. In the afternoon we took the bus to go to the little village of Deštné v Oh. There we visited two museums. After another little drive through the Eagle Mountains we visited a church called Neratov with an glas roof. In the evening we had the farewell dinner. There we had also the possibility to play bowling in a great atmosphere.

Friday

The last day started with packing our suitcases and walking to school. At school we presented our webpages (see here) and Mr. Kolb gave a little presentation of the whole project. We received our certifications and said goodbye to everyone. In the afternoon the bus picked us up and brought us to the train station in Prague. We arrived at 11 pm in Bayreuth it was a long journey but it was really worth it.

Speck and wine were not only on the menu during the learning activity in Brixen. They were also products in the online-shops that students had to work on. The focus of the week lay on search engine optimization (SEO) and product photography. Read on to learn more…

Welcome in Brixen

We were warmly welcomed at LBS Chr. J. Tschuggmall by our partners in Brixen, South Tirol - Italy. The meeting officially started very well on October 9, although the Germans and the Czechs had arrived the day before, because the journey can be tiring, so they had had at least some time to relax and explore the town a bit before the actual meeting.

So far, we had got a chance to get to know Italian educational system better, their lovely school, taste some of their excellent dishes, make international teams and learn something from our different cultures and languages. What we should probably mention as well is the thrilling marvellous city tour we experienced, led by a professional tour guide, which Jürgen Seeber had arranged for us. Brixen in general is a wonderful town surrounded by beautiful mountains with stunning views of the town and on the top of that we were enjoying perfect sunny weather. To guarantee an objective result, each student filled in a self-assessment online form to evaluate their competences and skills in the first place and they are supposed to do the same at the end of the week.

Project task - Optimize your shop

The project tasks for this week were search engine optimization (SEO) and product photography. To help with this task, we started with a short input on Monday in which students and teachers learned about the basics of SEO.

On Tuesday students had to “dive” into SEO. The teachers had set up working online-shops which were not at all search engine optimized. Students’ task for the week was to fix that. Here are a few tasks students had to take care of:

How does my client search the Net?
What is the difference between an organic and a generic search?
What are adwords, how do they work and where are they displayed?
Which Google ranking factors are the most important?
Which analysis tools are available that might be interesting for a search engine optimization?
How can you conduct a keyword analysis and what do you have to consider concerning a keyword strategy?

After answering these questions students needed to use the administration panel of their webshop and optimize it for search engine ranking for example by adding meta-descriptions to the product pages and using meaningful keywords. Mr Lukas Silbernagel - an e-commerce marketing expert from agency webalm - joined the group and provided very professional help. He assisted our students with e-commerce marketing steps and spent the whole day with us to support the students with any advice they needed. Mr Silbernagel is a graduate of the LBS Chr. J. Tschuggmall and now he works as an official Google partner, so he can be considered as a real expert of his field.

The goal of the week was to meet and learn how to use basic tools of analysis which should help a website get a better Google ranking in purpose to sell more products in an e-shop. Nevertheless, the educational program of our project is based on self-learning, so students participating in this meeting were supposed to do the tasks just with as little help as possible. Actually, the week also served as a course for teachers who were introduced to the art of SEO as well.

Professional product photography explained

To cover the topic of product photography, we visited partner school LBS Handel und Grafik Johannes Gutenberg in Bozen on Wednesday. We went by train to that beautiful and not so far away city and got astonished by the equipment, complexion and specialization. The whole day we spent in the company of professional photographers, Mr Arnold Ritter, Mr Maximilian Ritter and teacher Erich Dapunt who motivated our students with their passion and enthusiasm for their work. We learnt a lot, also thanks to their professional approach. It is unbelievable how happy we have been about the results and how positively the experts could influence our skillset. So, let us thank them once again for a wonderful time we spent with them. But that was not the end of the trip. We got a chance to see the oldest man in Europe in the Ötzi museum. And we have to say that he looks still the same :)

The following day we could ‘relax’ while hiking in the Italian Dolomites. We reached our final destination of Gschnagenhardt Alm around noon and there are no words to describe the wonderful nature and mountains with their fabulous views. This scenic landscape was the setting for taking additional professional-grade product photos of regional specialities. Teachers and students could apply their new skills they had gained the day before. After the photo shooting the specialities served as a delicious meal with a marvelous view of the surroundings.

On Friday students had to present their results of the project tasks they had worked on during the week. As during the week in Bayreuth in April the results were remarkable. In very active way students had learned about SEO, keyword optimization and product photography and created professional-level results. Furthermore, many of the students had not worked with an online-shop software before so the even learned that “on the fly” during the week.

Thank you and see you in Dobruška

Within the whole week our experiences went far into the heart of South-Tirolian culture as tasting their brilliant cuisine. For all that we greatly thank our Italian colleagues Jürgen Seeber, Helga Pernthaler and the school management. In addition, thanks for ordering such sunny weather :)

After a wonderful week, on Friday we had to say goodbye, but we will see each other soon because we can expect another exciting meeting in Dobruška held in March 2018. We are sure that our students have made grounds to a lot of new friendships and they will keep in touch, maybe for many years.

Books4u

Even in times of ebooks and the Internet paper books are a great way to relax and immerse into the world of fiction. This group created a shop for paper books. The shop comes in an elegant black and grey design focusing on the book title covers. A photo of a library in the titlebar shows what the shop is all about… books. So the shop’s marketing claim is absolutely true: “We know books. Books are all we can do for u.”

E-Cigs

Here in the EU smoking bans have led to a dramatic decline in the number of smokers. Why would you want to start a shop for e-cigarettes then? Because this group would like to encourage people to use e-cigarettes as a means to stop smoking. Accordingly they offer e-cigarettes and accessories. “Everyday starts from the ground up. So make sure you put your best foot forward.” Ideally you should put your foot forward with some shoes from this online store featuring the latest shoe models. The design of the shop is also kept in grey tones and features a beautiful fixed background image (which cannot be shown in the screenshot). What’s more is that this group managed to implement colours and sizes in their shop which is a really advanced thing to do!

Learning activity in Bayreuth

Within our Erasmus+ project carried out by the vocational schools Kaufmännische Berufsschule Bayreuth (Germany), Scuola Professionale Provinciale Tschuggmall Brixen (South Tyrol) der SPSeli.it Dobruska (Czech Republic) the first visit of teachers and students took place in Bayreuth from 2 April 2017 until 7 April 2017.

On Sunday afternoon 10 students and 2 teachers from our partner schools in Brixen and Dobruska each arrived in Bayreuth and checked in in the HWK hostel in Bayreuth. We enjoyed dinner together with the partners and students got to know each other a little better.

Goal of the week was to let students work independently in mixed international groups on setting up their own online shops with the software Prestashop and the assistance of teaching material developed by the German teachers.

On Monday morning the headmaster OStD Bernhard Grünewald welcomed the guests together with 14 German students and the participating teachers OStR Kolb, OStRin Kolb, OStRin Stöcker, OStRin Wunderlich, StD Echtler and StR Dietl. At the beginning the students attended a short presentation about the vocational schoolsystem in Bavaria before they were shown around the schoolhouse.

After that the students got down to business and started working in their groups. They showed a lot of creativity in developing business ideas for their shops. The groups went on setting up the online shops on Tuesday by adding products, pictures and description of products. At noon the entire group attended a reception at the town hall or Bayreuth by deputy mayor Thomas Ebersberger.

On Wednesday Patrick Weinstein founder and managing director of Patworx GmbH, an acknowledged Prestashop expert spent the entire day with the students and gave insight in Prestashop and his work. He helped the groups setting up their shops, managed to solve more complex problems and gave useful tips.

The task for Thursday was to finish the shops and prepare a presentation about the shops, before the students had a tour at the brewery museum at Maisels brewery. In the evening the participating students and teachers enjoyed the farewell dinner at the restaurant Schinner Braustuben. The final presentation of the shops to a bigger audience took place on Friday morning where other students from Kaufmännische Berufsschule Bayreuth where invited to see the respectable results of one week project work.

One week of project work passed very quickly so that the students left Bayreuth on Friday noon. But everyone is looking forward to seeing each other again in autumn 2018 in Brixen, when student will work on search engine optimization (SEO), website analytics and product photography.

Update from Bayreuth

We are here in the KBS Bayreuth, Staatliche Berufsschule II. In the project 10 students from South Tyrol, 10 students from the Czech Republic are involved cooperating with 14 students from Germany. They have been working on setting up an online shop in mixed groups. The goal is to let the students work independently with just a little support from their teachers and collaborate in international teams using English as an official language of the project.

We all arrived in Bayreuth on Sunday, April 2 in the late afternoon after a long trip. We checked in at the hostel and after a warm welcome from Mr Kolb, the coordinator of this project, we went for dinner in the centre of Bayreuth. We stayed in a typical restaurant and enjoyed typical local food. We came back together with a lot of first impressions and curiosity about following days.

On Monday we were welcomed by the headmaster Mr Bernhard Grünewald and the German project team. Then we took a tour round the school to get to know the educational system of local vocational schools. After a short input from Martin Kolb, students started working on the project tasks. They formed five mixed international teams consisting of 2 Czech, 2 Italian and 3 German students.

To guarantee an objective evaluation result, each student filled in a self-assessment sheet to evaluate their competences and skills at the beginning and they will do the same at the end of the week. Initially the students had to think of a business idea for their online shop before they started setting up their online shops. After lunch we took an interesting guided tour around the city. We visited great cultural spots in Bayreuth, like Richard Wagner’s house called Wahnfried, the famous Margravial Opera House or the New Castle. At the end of the day we had dinner in a typical local restaurant together.

On the next day the students went on working on their online shops and at 12 o’clock we had an official meeting at the town hall with the second mayor Mr Thomas Ebersberger. It was a very pleasant visit and Mr Ebersberger gave us exciting information about his town in a short speech. The rest of the day we spent some time with sightseeing and we enjoyed the beauty of the town.

Then on Wednesday we welcomed Patrick Weinstein, a developer, a programmer and a Platinum partner of PrestaShop. He spent his whole day sharing his expertise and giving professional input to our students. They seized the opportunity and took advantage of his presence asking him very useful questions which could expand their knowledge and competences. After such hard but very successful work the students could enjoy a free evening.

On Thursday we met again at school for the completion of the shops and preparation of a presentation of the project work which will be done on Friday. The teachers also placed some orders in the online shops to check the functional setup. By doing that teachers became customers and students had to process these orders and therefore go through the entire shopping process. In the afternoon we are visiting a local beer brewery and meet for the farewell dinner all together.

On Friday the students present their results and evaluate the project week in Bayreuth. The concept of the evaluation has been designed to give students and teachers the possibility to see the personal developments.

After that we will have to say goodbye, fortunately just for a short time, because we will see each other again and keep in touch. The students have opened many friendships which set the base for an international common future just the way the mayor highlighted in his speech. We all are looking forward to meeting in Brixen in October.
